ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTERNSHIP POSITIONS
New England Legal Foundation Minority Law Student Internship Program

Program Goals and Activities.  The New England Legal Foundation is a not-for-profit public interest law firm devoted to free enterprise, balanced economic growth and the right to rational, responsive and properly limited government.  With the support of Boston area law schools, companies and charitable foundations involved in local and national efforts to increase minority involvement in  the legal profession, NELF has conducted a program to improve employment opportunities for minority law students and encourage their long-term involvement in the area of public interest law.  The goals of NELF’s Minority Law Student Project are:

1. To educate minority law students in public interest law from a free enterprise perspective, with a focus on environmental regulation, employment law, corporate and individual rights, fees, taxes, and regulated industries;

2. To provide minority law students with exposure to the private legal community, to provide them with legal work experience, to increase their knowledge of the law, and to build their professional confidence;

3. To provide minority law students with experience in working for a not-for-profit public interest law firm which, in turn, exposes them to law firm operations and client and constituent interactions; and

4. To increase NELF’s capacity while developing the interns’ research and writing skills.

Law students accepted into the program work under the guidance of experienced attorneys on a variety of issues of regional and national importance which the Foundation is currently addressing.  NELF is currently seeking one or two law students to work during the Summer.

While each intern’s experience is unique, activities in which law student interns have participated in the past have included:

1. Researching statutes, regulations, cases and other legal material relevant to issues and cases  which NELF is addressing; writing internal memoranda of law summarizing that research;

2. Drafting pleadings and appellate and trial court memoranda and briefs;

3. Working on general litigation activities including discovery and court proceedings; and

4. Attending meetings relevant to the issues and cases on which the intern is working.

Law student interns will be selected by NELF attorneys. Compensation may be available, generally at the rate of $20.00 per hour.

Requirements.  Applicants must be in their second or third year of law school. They must have taken or be taking a course in constitutional law.  Experience with administrative law issues is also valuable.

Applications.  Students who are interested in applying for an internship at NELF should send a resume, law school transcript, short writing sample, and brief cover letter to Martin Newhouse, President, New England Legal Foundation, 150 Lincoln Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02111.

Excellent writing skills are required. Computer systems management experience is a major plus.
